#WeLovePianists

YOKOSO! Welcome piano fans around the world!

Music is the soundtrack of our lives. From the first piano lesson as a child, through every major milestone in life to old age, music is with us.

We at Kawai love music. We love our instruments, the people who play them, with all their differences, distinctive characteristics and talents, and the people who make them, and give each piece of music, whatever the genre, its own unique sound. It doesn’t matter to us whether you attend a music school or are self-taught, whether you’re just playing your first notes, or your hands are already gliding virtuosically over the keys – what counts is your passion. A passion that we share with you from the bottom of our hearts.

To show you our appreciation, we have named our campaign #welovepianists. Come with us on an exciting musical journey, as we meet extraordinary people for whom life would not be the same without a well-tuned piano.

It’s night in the huge, empty Kawai warehouse, where keyboards, pianos and wings – partly in boxes, partly unpacked – are waiting for their timely delivery before Christmas. On the Shigeru Kawai EX concert piano, a symbol of masterful Japanese instrument making, Henning Schmiedt assembles individual musical passages from five selected pieces from his album “Spazieren” and weaves them into a medley that follows the very personal dramaturgy of our campaign #welovepianists. It begins with Ida’s song and then wanders through the lives of the other four piano players Lara, Andreas, Peter and Birgit. Each of the five melodies represents the character of the respective pianist and therefore represents their personal soundtrack. Henning’s playing finally closes the circle and the stories of our five heroes are connected to his story.⠀

From time to time, when Peter feels the urge for freedom, he gets on his motorcycle and enjoys the rush of speed. For him it is the perfect balance and another piece in the mosaic of the exciting life of an urban eccentric with an unerring sense for aesthetics and style.

As a cultural journalist Peter has an excellent knowledge of art history. From the old Dutch masters, to contemporary young artists from all over the world.

When a real lounge lion gets hungry, sometimes it just has to be home cooking. Peter’s pancakes are a poem and have already sweetened many Sundays for him and his friends. And once the flour or sugar runs out, there’s always a helpful neighbor in his Kiez who is guaranteed to help out.⠀

Peter lives in a vibrant district in the middle of the German capital. He appreciates the rough but warm atmosphere of this multicultural district, where there is something new to discover every day. With his love for detail, it is not surprising that photography also plays an important role in his life.

The impresario of his own cultural salon in Berlin, loves to give old things their place and honor them in everyday life. One of his greatest passions has always been music, be it in the form of rare record treasures or his aged stage piano by Kawai, which was awarded as the best instrument in the category “digital pianos” at the Frankfurt Music Fair in 2000 and today – not only for Peter – has cult status.

Peter is a filmmaker with a special liking for art and culture. His very personal mission is to preserve beauty or create something new. Once he has found a project, he pursues his goal with a clear view and great craftsmanship. Be it the reproduction of legendary furniture design classics or the sonorous play on his cult Kawai MP-9000.

It sounds like a hackneyed cliché, but as the daughter of a Sicilian father, good pasta is an absolute honor for Lara. No wonder that her whole circle of friends loves the hot sauces made according to an old family recipe. When it comes to cooking, Lara’s motto is: only the right composition leaves a lasting impression.

Game, set and win. When playing table tennis in the park, it is better not to mess with Lara, because her butterballs are feared in the entire south of Cologne. And don’t you dare to call this serious sport Ping-Pong in her presence…

Didn’t we say it? Lara is always good for a surprise. Just a moment ago she was completelyabsorbed in the music at the white Kawai piano, now she’s in soccer fever on the couch. Crunchy snacks, a cool soda and a victory for her favorite team: It’s often the simple things that make you happy.

When Lara is not sitting at the piano or on the hunt for a new, original gem for her collection of opera props, she likes to enjoy the view from her bicycle over the ships anchored in the Rheinauhafen and the skyline of Cologne.

Even when drawing, Lara quickly turns everything around her beloved keyboard instrument. This is no coincidence, because even when working with the pen, precision and a unique style are important.

The dreamy first impression may be deceptive. Because Lara is full of surprises. Since she was four years old, the Cologne native has been playing the piano with continuing enthusiasm. The fascination for the art of the musicology student was in a way inherited from her parents, who both work on theater and opera stages.

If you are so energized, you have to relax. Ida likes to do this with cat Lilli and other heroes of her cosy hammock. At the moment, ancient legends and exciting adventure books are especially popular with her.

Whether piano or sewing machine. It is us humans who breathe life into an object and create beauty with its help. We at Kawai are big Ida fans. This is as true for her piano playing as it is for her fancy, self-made cloth bags.

Like many children, Ida loves an extra portion of glitter. That’s why colorful pearls are the main ingredient in the secret recipe for her self-made clay. Just like playing the piano without notes, it is the little surprises and personal ideas that create the special magic.

Whether Irish Dance or tap: Dancing is another passion of the eleven-year-old and we are not surprised that Ida has often made it to the winners’ podium in competitions. Just like playing the piano, the motto here is: “Practice makes perfect!”.

Creativity knows many colors. One moment she is colorful like a paint box, and the next moment black and white like the keys of a keyboard, but in Ida’s case always an expression of special enthusiasm and joy of life.

When we think of Ida, we think of almost inexhaustible energy and full commitment in all situations in life. Whether romping on the playground or taking weekly lessons with her piano teacher: Ida does not do things by halves. For us she belongs to a new generation of passionate piano players and we are very happy to know her.

Birgit is especially proud of her yellow cherries and every year she looks forward to the lush harvest with which she delights neighbors and friends. Whether in the form of homemade cakes or exotic chutneys.

“Weit entfernt” composed by Henning Schmiedt / Instagram: @schmiedthenning

For a juicy sandwich and freshly brewed, strong coffee, Birgit leaves everything alone. Who needs canapés and champagne adorned with gold leaf when instead you can enjoy such an unadulterated natural taste, but with the best ingredients?

The evening dawns and it slowly gets cooler. Time to light a crackling fire in the fireplace and review the day musically at the piano. It is these quiet hours at the end of the day that Birgit especially appreciates.

Her dog is also happy about the almost boundless freedom that the country life offers at Birgit’s side and enjoys the sun as much as her caresses. And when she also brings out the much desired delicacies, the four-legged happiness is complete.

As with melodies, scents are associated with lifelong memories. A scent can suddenly transport a person into another time or trigger very specific emotions. Birgit especially loves the scent of her roses and therefore spends a lot of time raising and caring for these precious plants.

Years ago a good friend gave her a used Kawai wing, which Birgit would not want to miss anymore. Besides the delicious vitamins from her own cultivation, Birgit keeps herself fit with daily piano playing and regular chess games. We are very impressed by the positive effect of this obviously extremely effective combination and officially recommend it to others.

Birgit looks back on a successful career as an entrepreneur. And this in an era when professional self-realization was by no means the order of the day for women. But like Kawai, Birgit was always a step ahead of her time. In the meantime she enjoys her well-deserved retirement in the countryside and grows fruit and vegetables in her huge garden.

Those of you who haven’t downloaded a fitness app to your smartphone by now at the latest, or extended your annual contract at the gym, really can’t be helped. And for everyone else we have the following tip: play the piano again. You will not regret it.

“Wanderschuhe” composed by Henning Schmiedt / Instagram: @schmiedthenning

Anyone who wants to label Andreas as a hardened fitness guru inevitably fails because of his own superficiality. Because in his role as an independent business consultant and marketing professional, Andreas not only demands the muscles, but also the grey cells of his clients. His expertise is in demand and he has already helped many founder on his way to a successful business model.

“Wanderschuhe” composed by Henning Schmiedt / Instagram: @schmiedthenning

Yes, outrageous, isn’t it? He can also still dance. And how! Obviously, a veritable cornucopia of talents was poured out over Andreas, but of course he would never have made it this far without endurance, tireless training and passion. And there is one thing he knows only too well: without continuous practicing and trying, there is no development. Neither on the piano, nor at work, nor in sports competitions.

“Wanderschuhe” composed by Henning Schmiedt / Instagram: @schmiedthenning

Higher, faster, further. A life without sporty ambition is simply unimaginable for Andreas. In his supreme discipline, the sprint, he won numerous medals in his youth. He still passes on his experiences from this time in workshops to the young athletics talents and ambitious hobby runners.

“Wanderschuhe” composed by Henning Schmiedt / Instagram: @schmiedthenning

Once the Battle Ropes have been set into vibration, they visually remind us of the double strand of human DNA. Andi’s biological roots are in Colombia, but he was adopted by German parents when he was a baby. When long-distance travel will finally be possible again, he is eager to visit the fascinating land of his ancestors.

“Wanderschuhe” composed by Henning Schmiedt / Instagram: @schmiedthenning

Hard shell – soft core. It sounds like this phrase was invented for Andreas. Because whoever experiences the uncompromising way he works the sandbag during boxing training cannot believe his eyes and ears when the same hands sensitively reach into the keys of the piano.

“Wanderschuhe” composed by Henning Schmiedt / Instagram: @schmiedthenning

Andreas is always on the move. While others torment themselves in the gym to stay in shape, the twenty-seven-year-old’s irrepressible urge to move helps him in his work as a personal trainer and health expert. It’s frustrating for most of us, but Andi has usually done more exercise on Monday evenings than we’ve done in a whole month.
